- Logic and The Environment, Part 1: The Simple Truths :

Is the Logic 'Environment' actually necessary? Share More sharing options Followers 0. Reply to this topic Start new topic. Recommended Posts. Cobalt19 Posted November 26, Posted November 26, This question will no doubt reveal or confirm my endless stupidity about Logic.

When I first met you, you didn't realize I can't forget you or your surprise You introduced me to my mind And left me wanting, you and your kind My life was empty, forever on a down Until you took me, showed me around My life is free now, my life is clear Come on now, try it out.

Logic Pro X This is going back when Logic was owned by eMagic, by the way. I was using it on the PC side, by the way. Still have the disks and dongle.

Since I am now using software instruments that exist all in the computer, I rarely go into the Environment window except to gaze at it for old time's sake. I am certain that, for many, the Environment still has its uses especially when using MIDI devices outside of their computer. Logic's "Environment" is a pretty powerful tool, though, and one that's worth learning at some point in time.

I'm glad that Logic still has it. Atlas Posted November 27, Posted November 27, To give a short answer to your question: yes, absolutely Is it required to be Environment proficient to use Logic: no. But acquiring knowledge definitely opens up possibilities not accessible to the ignorants It's pretty much as simple and straightforward as that. Oh, and to use the environment for creative or technical purposes requires you know three things: 1 the extra features of the environment are almost exclusively about creating MIDI processing schemes.

Cobalt19 Posted November 27, Wow, thank you to all who have replied. I believe I understand what you have said too. RedBaron Posted November 27, Stop this talk of getting rid of the environment right now! I cable MIDI all over the place in the environment. My whole setup would be dead in the water without it.

Logic X Ploki Posted November 28, Posted November 28, The environment isn't going anywhere any time soon, since logic is built around it. RedBaron Posted November 28, What do you do in the environment in particular? I'm genuinely curious. The environment and a couple of other things are the reason i use logic and not just protools. Maybe i think that because i'm old school and i like MIDI, so it's obviously a matter of taste.

MacBook Pro retina 13" late Processor 2. I use the environment to manage my interface. I know you can do this on the arrange page if you create an output track, but that's not as elegant as solo safing the output object in the environment. MacBook Pro 2. Logic You can do a lot of creative stuff there too, anyway Posted November 29, Oh Ploki, if only that were true You're waaaay better off doing MIDI processing in the environment or in max because that stuff works for sure.

But, after reading some the following posts, I think that I'm going to explore the Environment more deeply, especially if it can be configured to edit MIDI information quicker than how I'm going it now. Oh though, that probably means reading the manual and I really hate to read!

And, I have a good thing going with my current routine in working with Logic. But, if there's a better, more efficient way of managing and editing MIDI, then that's worth the time and effort of exploring other routine options. This will create a new Multi Instrument object with 16 squares corresponding to the 16 possible MIDI channels, though it doesn't matter if your instrument has fewer parts than this, or even if it isn't multitimbral at all.

Initially the squares will have diagonal lines through them, so you need to click on the ones you wish to use with your instrument to make them active. For example, if you have an eight-part multitimbral synth that is set to operate on MIDI channels one to eight, then click on boxes one to eight to get rid of the diagonal lines. Now you can click on the Multi Instrument name at the bottom of the icon and use the Text tool from the Toolbox to open up a name dialogue box. Give your object a name relating to the physical synth you have plugged in.

With the Multi Instrument object still selected, go to the Parameters box at the left of the window and select the physical MIDI port to which your synth is connected.

It's also worth selecting each of the squares you've unticked and then ticking Program, Volume, and Pan in the parameter box so that your connected instrument can receive these MIDI messages from Logic. Why these are off by default I'll never know!

If you select your Multi Instrument by clicking at the top of the object, the parameter box on the left should show All in the MIDI Channel information line. If you select by clicking at the bottom of the object, the MIDI channel of whichever numbered square is currently selected will show up in this line. Every Logic project contains several default pre-existing layers as seen below. Let's explore what kinds of objects each one displays. By default, audio channels, instruments, auxes, outputs, the pre-listen channel and the click channel appear in this layer.

And Logic's programming is such that when you create any new audio object audio channel, instrument, aux, or output it is automatically placed in the Mixer layer. This behavior makes perfect sense and keeps things organized. It's no coincidence that the Mixer layer's appearance has a very strong resemblance to that of the Mixer window.

We'll explore the relationship between them shortly. MIDI processing objects such as arpeggiators and chord memorizers typically find a home here. We'll examine the purpose of the objects found in this layer in an upcoming article in this series. Moving an object into this layer makes it visible in all layers.

Cool feature! Imagine being able to see your Stereo Output or Klopfgeist in every layer! The downside: wherever you position an object in this layer will cause it to appear in that same place in other layers, likely causing graphic overlaps in the other layers and creating a mess. Still, might be worth experimenting with. This layer shows all environment objects in a single layer as a text list by default. Disabling the text view results in a jumbled mess of overlapping objects and is really only useful for its comedic value.

A source of confusion to many newbies is the relationship between the channel strips shown in the Mixer window and those shown in the environment. The answer is simple: the channel strips you see in the Mixer window are exactly, precisely, the same ones that live in the environment! The Mixer window simply displays them in a visually neat fashion and offers various options for determining which objects you want to see at any given time.

The Mixer Window. The channel strips shown are the same ones seen in the environment window above. The only ones that doesn't appear here are the Prelisten channel and the Click, because the Mixer window is set to display only items assigned to tracks in the Arrangement. As a side note, the channel strips you see in the Inspector in the Arrange page are the same ones that live in the environment too.

For the most part, the Mixer is limited to displaying channel strips for audio-related channel strips and MIDI instruments, and to the extent that we're mixing and engineering tracks that's fine.

Additionally, the Mixer window has a few features not available in the environment, such as track notes. But there are still plenty of reasons to view the mixer in the environment instead.

Read on! One of the main complaints about the Mixer window is that you can't re-order channel strips, and there are times when this is highly desirable. For example, your arrangement from top to bottom has 8 tracks of drums, followed by a few tracks of synths, and then a few tracks of percussion.

To make it easier to balance all of the drumming elements, it would be nice to move the percussion channels closer to the drum channels. Well, that's just not possible in the Mixer window.

The Mixer Window, showing drum and percussion channels separated by some synth tracks. Percussion tracks are highlighted.

But in the environment, you can rearrange your audio channels however you like. Now, the changes you make by moving the furniture around won't be visible in the Mixer window, but in this situation you'd view the environment window instead of the Mixer.
